Hiring a Car at Fuerteventura Airport (FUE): How It Works
Collecting your vehicle on arrival is the simplest option, and well-organised car hire Fuerteventura airport pickup saves you real time. The desks are in the arrivals hall, the car park is right next door, and you're soon on your way north or south. This guide adds the airport-specific detail to our car hire in Fuerteventura page. We collected and returned our car at this airport in July 2025: here's exactly how it works, opening hours included, and the details that save you extra charges.
In a nutshell
- Desks: in the arrivals hall (ground floor), near baggage reclaim.
- Opening hours: generally 7.30am-10.30pm; for night flights, expect an after-hours pickup/return.
- On site: car park right next to the terminal, cars kept in the shade, quick exit onto the FV-2.
- Tip: fill up the night before if you're returning the car early morning (petrol stations are often shut).
Collecting your car at Fuerteventura airport: how it works
The process is straightforward. Off the plane, collect your luggage, then follow the "Car Rental / Alquiler" signs to the desks, on the ground floor of the arrivals hall at Fuerteventura airport (FUE), also known as El Matorral, about 5 km from Puerto del Rosario.
Once the contract is signed, you're handed the keys and shown where the car is parked. Good news: the hire car park sits right next to the terminal. You'll find your car easily and be at the exit within minutes, heading for the FV-2 towards Corralejo in the north or JandÃa in the south.
In our case, the cars were parked in the shade, clean and in good condition, and the agency staff were welcoming — a smooth start to the trip.
Terminal desk or shuttle bus?
Most major brands — Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Goldcar, OK Rent a Car, and CICAR — run a desk right inside the terminal. That means you can collect your car at the airport (FUE) counter, no shuttle and no waiting, then head straight to the car park next door.
A handful of providers, though, are based a few kilometres away and run a free shuttle from the airport bus stop. You can still arrange your car hire right at Fuerteventura airport (FUE) by choosing a terminal-desk provider rather than an off-site one. Goldcar also offers a self-service "Key'n Go" option, letting you skip the counter altogether. Check this point when you book: an off-site provider means a bit more time on arrival.
Checking the car over at pickup
Before you leave the car park, take two minutes to inspect the car. It's the habit that protects your deposit.
Walk around the vehicle and photograph any scratch, dent or mark that isn't already noted on the contract. If in doubt, flag it at the desk before you drive off. These time-stamped photos are your best evidence if damage is ever queried at drop-off.
Desk opening hours and after-hours pickup
The airport desks are generally open from 7.30am to 10.30pm, seven days a week. For a flight landing or leaving outside these hours, pickup and return follow a simple after-hours procedure.
On a night arrival, the agency usually leaves instructions and the car's location; on return, you park the car, lock it, and drop the contract and keys in the key box outside the office.
Always confirm the exact procedure and hours with your provider when booking, as they can vary slightly by season.
Our experience: a 5am drop-off
Our return flight left very early. We dropped the car off at 5am, well before the desks opened, and the whole thing was contactless: car parked at the airport car park, locked, contract and keys posted in the return box.
The one catch is fuel. At that hour, the petrol stations around the airport weren't open yet, so there was no way to fill up right before returning the car. The provider charged a fuel fee as a result (€35.43 in our case). The fix is simple: fill up the evening before, while the stations are still open.

Documents, deposit and insurance at the desk
You only need a few documents at the counter, but they're non-negotiable.
Bring your driving licence and a payment card for the deposit hold at the desk: the provider blocks an amount on the main driver's card, released after the car is checked in. A credit card (not debit) in the right name is usually required.
The excess waiver is also offered at the counter. It's best to decide beforehand: including it at booking or via a third-party insurer is generally cheaper than buying it at the desk. Full cover details are on our main car hire guide.
Returning the car and getting to your flight
For drop-off, allow a bit of margin before boarding. You park the car in the dedicated car park next to the terminal, then it's a few minutes' walk to departures.
Where to go after the airport?
The airport is perfectly placed to explore the whole island. Head north and you'll reach Puerto del Rosario and then Corralejo in around half an hour; head south and the FV-2 leads to Costa Calma, Morro Jable and the JandÃa peninsula. That's the whole point of picking up a car straight off the plane.
