Climbing Mount Teide: Cable Car, Summit Permit and Tips
Spain's highest point at 3,715 m, Mount Teide is Tenerife's must-see: a volcano at the heart of a UNESCO-listed national park, reached freely by car and climbed by cable car. Reaching the peak itself, however, requires a permit to book, now subject to an eco-fee. How to get to Mount Teide?
You reach Mount Teide by car on the TF-21, the main road crossing the national park. From the north, allow about 45 minutes from Puerto de la Cruz via La Orotava; from the south, about an hour from Costa Adeje via the TF-38 and Vilaflor. Access to the park and road is free.
The climb is spectacular, through lava fields and Canary pines, but winding: drive gently and bring warm layers, as it's far cooler than at the coast. Car hire in Tenerife is the easiest way to get there at your own pace.
The Teide cable car: prices and hours
The Teide cable car links the base, at 2,356 m, to the upper station of La Rambleta, at 3,555 m, in a few minutes. Expect about €40 return for a non-resident adult (around €20 for a child), with reduced rates for residents.
It generally runs from 9am to 5pm in winter, until 6.40pm in summer, subject to the weather (it closes in high wind). Book your slot online ahead and go up early, before the clouds and crowds. Time at the upper station is limited to one hour.

When to go and what to see at Teide?
Sunrise and sunset above the sea of clouds are among the island's most memorable sights. The park is also one of the world's best stargazing sites, recognised by the Starlight label.
