Where to stay in Tenerife: north or south?
For sunshine and beaches, choose the south; for authenticity and nature, the north. Deciding where to stay in Tenerife mainly comes down to this contrast, as the two sides of the island offer very different climates and moods.
The south (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) is where the big beach resorts are: near-guaranteed sunshine year-round, long sandy beaches and plenty of hotels, all 15-20 minutes from Tenerife South airport. It's the usual choice for a beach holiday.
The north, around Puerto de la Cruz, is greener, cooler and more genuinely Canarian. You'll find black-sand beaches, real town life and often gentler prices. It's also the best base for Teide National Park and hiking.
In practice, most beach-holiday travellers stay in the south. Wherever you sleep, car hire in Tenerife is useful for exploring beyond your resort, especially from the north.

Three big resorts share the south, a few minutes' drive apart, each with its own mood.

When to book your Tenerife stay?
Tenerife is a year-round destination thanks to its eternal-spring climate, but prices and availability swing a lot. Summer, the Christmas and New Year holidays, and the Santa Cruz carnival (February) are the busiest periods.
Winter also draws many northern Europeans chasing the sun: from November to March, the south often sells out. For these periods, book several months ahead to secure the best accommodation at the best price.
