The Masca hike means descending the barranco, a deep, narrow gorge, from the village down to the sea. The trail winds between dizzying walls, crosses the streambed and emerges on a small isolated beach, one of the wildest corners of the island.
It's a physical hike, both on the way down and back, over rocky and sometimes slippery ground. It calls for good fitness and suitable gear, but rewards you with extraordinary scenery, to combine with a visit to the village of Masca.
Booking, rules and safety
Since it reopened, access to the Masca gorge has been strictly controlled to protect the site and hikers' safety. Online booking is mandatory and paid, with a limited number of entry slots each day.
How does the return work?
Once at the bottom, there are two options depending on conditions: hike back up the gorge, or reach Los Gigantes by boat from Masca beach. The boat-return arrangements vary and can be suspended: be sure to check them before setting off.
Los Gigantes beach, at the foot of the great cliffs, is precisely the arrival point of the boat services and a fine spot to end the day.
How to reach the Masca trailhead?
The start is in Masca village, at the end of the narrow, winding TF-436 mountain road. Parking there is very limited: many hikers reach the village by bus from Santiago del Teide. Car hire in Tenerife remains handy for the approach.
