Arrecife isn't a classic beach destination, but it's a practical option for staying on Lanzarote. The island's capital has real local life, away from the big tourist complexes: everyday shops, markets, restaurants used as much by residents as by visitors.
The Charco de San Ginés, a small lagoon lined with white houses and fish restaurants, and the Castillo de San José, an 18th-century fortress turned contemporary art museum with input from César Manrique, are the two must-sees a short walk from the centre.
Why stay in Arrecife rather than by the sea
Accommodation here is often cheaper than in Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca, a real plus for smaller budgets or longer stays. Being right by ACE airport (about 5km) also makes it a sensible base for a late arrival or an early departure, without extra driving at the end of the trip.
We ourselves stayed in a small villa with a pool during our time on Lanzarote, booked with a private host through Booking.com, in a quiet village inland not far from Arrecife. Very little going on around it, but messaging the owner before we arrived made settling into the island easier — an alternative worth considering if Arrecife's town feel isn't for you.
